How Periodontal Treatment Works

Exam and evaluation. We check your gums, measure the space between the gums and teeth, and review any X-rays needed to see the bone around your teeth. Our office uses digital X-ray technology.
Treatment plan. Based on what we find, we'll explain whether you have gingivitis, gum disease or a healthy mouth, and recommend the right next steps.
Scaling and root planing (if needed). Scaling removes tartar from the tooth surface. Root planing smooths the root surfaces to remove infected tooth structure. Deep scaling and root planing is usually broken down into one section of the mouth per appointment, which allows adequate healing time and keeps each appointment shorter.
Periodontal maintenance. After treatment, regular maintenance visits continue the removal of plaque and tartar, along with scaling, root planing and polishing as needed.
