What Counts as a Dental Emergency?
Not every dental problem needs an urgent visit, but some can't wait. Call us right away if you have:
- Severe or persistent toothache: pain that keeps you up at night or doesn't ease with over-the-counter pain relief.
- A knocked-out (avulsed) tooth: the first hour matters most if the tooth is to be saved.
- A cracked, chipped or broken tooth: especially if it's sharp, painful or sensitive to hot and cold.
- Swelling of the face, jaw or gums: this can signal an infection or abscess.
- A lost filling or crown: the exposed tooth is vulnerable to further damage.
- Bleeding that won't stop after an extraction or injury.
- Pain or swelling around a wisdom tooth.
- A broken denture, bridge or night guard that you rely on every day.
Go to the ER or call 911 if you have facial swelling that affects your breathing or swallowing, a high fever with dental swelling, a possible broken jaw, or uncontrolled bleeding. A dental office isn't the right first stop for these.
What to Do Before You Get to Our Office
These first-aid steps can ease pain and improve the chance of saving a tooth. For more detail, see our guide Dental Emergency First Aid: What to Do Before Your Visit.
Knocked-out tooth
Pick the tooth up by the crown (the chewing surface), not the root. If it's dirty, rinse it gently with milk or water; don't scrub it. Try to place it back in the socket and bite gently on gauze. If you can't, keep it in a small container of milk or inside your cheek, and call us immediately.
Toothache
Rinse with warm salt water and floss gently to remove any trapped food. Use a cold compress on the outside of the cheek. Don't put aspirin directly on the gum, as it can burn the tissue.
Chipped or broken tooth
Save any pieces, rinse your mouth with warm water and use a cold compress to limit swelling. Cover sharp edges with sugar-free gum or dental wax.
Lost filling or crown
Keep the crown if you have it. Temporary dental cement from a pharmacy can protect the tooth until your visit. Avoid chewing on that side.
Swelling or abscess
Rinse with salt water and use a cold compress. Don't apply heat. Swelling can mean infection, so call us the same day.
How We Treat Dental Emergencies
When you arrive, our first priority is your comfort. We'll examine the area and take digital X-rays, which use less radiation than traditional film and give us images in seconds (learn about our digital X-ray technology). Then we'll explain your options before any treatment begins.
Depending on what we find, emergency care may include:
- Root canal treatment to remove infection and save a badly decayed or abscessed tooth.
- Tooth extraction when a tooth can't be saved, including impacted wisdom teeth.
- Dental bonding to repair chips and small fractures, often in a single visit.
- Dental crowns to protect a cracked or heavily damaged tooth.
- Fillings to replace a lost filling or treat a painful cavity.
- Dental implants or dentures to replace a tooth that's lost.
- Gum disease treatment for painful, swollen or bleeding gums.
If we can't finish everything in one visit, we'll relieve your pain and stabilize the tooth, then plan follow-up care that fits your schedule.
Emergency Dental Care for the Whole Family
Accidents happen at every age. We treat adults, teens and children, from a child's chipped front tooth after a fall to a grandparent's broken denture. For young athletes, a custom mouth guard is one of the best ways to prevent the next emergency. Learn more about our pediatric dental care.

Emergency Dentist FAQs
Do you offer same-day emergency appointments?
Yes. We offer same-day emergency appointments. Call 407-284-1645 as early in the day as you can so we can fit you in.
What are your hours?
We're open Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm. After hours or on weekends, you can book an appointment online.
Should I go to the ER or the dentist for a toothache?
For most toothaches, broken teeth and lost fillings, a dentist is the right choice: hospital ERs usually can't repair teeth. Go to the ER for swelling that affects breathing or swallowing, a suspected broken jaw, or uncontrolled bleeding.
How quickly do I need to be seen for a knocked-out tooth?
As quickly as possible. The best chance of saving the tooth is within about an hour. Keep the tooth moist in milk or inside your cheek and call us right away.
Do you accept insurance for emergency visits?
We accept most PPO insurance plans. Call us to confirm your coverage. Uninsured patients can ask about our in-house plans and no-credit-check financing.
Do you treat children's dental emergencies?
Yes. We see patients of all ages, including children with chipped, loose or knocked-out teeth.
