Tooth Whitening

It's more difficult that it seems to keep your teeth clean and white.
Your teeth can be stained by drinking coffee, wine and soda, smoking, or eating foods such as beets, tomato sauce and berries. Proper brushing and flossing will keep your teeth clean, but can also leave them dull and lifeless. Teeth whitening is an excellent way to restore the natural color of your teeth, or even make them brighter.
Teeth whitening, commonly known as dental bleaching, is the procedure whereby visible stains and discoloration present on the teeth is removed to reveal a brighter, whiter smile. There are generally two ways in which this can be done – through in-office professional teeth whitening, or at home using DIY bleaching solutions such as tray kits, lights, strips and other methods.

How is In-Office whitening better than DIY at-home bleaching?

There are countless products easily available in the market today that promise a pearly white smile without having to visit the dentist. Some of these may work, but the results are nowhere near what you’ll experience following a professional teeth whitening at the dental office. There are several reasons for this:

- Dentists use top quality whitening products with a higher concentration of bleaching agents – most commonly Peroxide. The higher concentration of peroxide in the whitening gel allows for better breakdown of tough stains present on the enamel, and thus, better cleaning.

- Because the procedure is being performed by licensed professionals – there are little or no chances of things going wrong. For instance, at home, you may be using the incorrect technique, or too little or too much of the product which can compromise the results. When performed correctly, using good quality materials, teeth whitening can give you a smile that is 4-8 shades brighter than before – depending upon the extent and degree of discoloration initially present.

- Following the procedure, you will receive a very specific set of instructions that you can follow to make sure your smile remains bright and clean for a long period of time. Your hygienist will also tell you about the different habits and things that can cause your teeth to stain and discolor faster, so you can steer clear of them.

- Teeth whitening is generally a single-visit procedure and you’ll be able to see the results soon after the treatment is completed. For mild to moderate staining, you can be sure that you’ll walk out of the dental office with a mini smile makeover, and teeth gleaming brighter than before.
